Walk in the National Parks
(With a car, it is half an hours drive.
We do an organised trip to Dorrigo National Park and can take people to
other National Parks with a minimum number of people)
Dorrigo National Park is a World Heritage Park. Our trip incorporates
doing one (two if you’re fit) walks in the park and having a swim
at Dangar Falls. In the school holidays there is the option of doing a
‘ranger guided’ Discovery trip.
Bellingen YHA will also organise trips with Hinterland
Tours to Cathedral Rocks National Park and New England National Park
and will organise overnight walks from New England National Park to the
Bellinger Valley (prior notice is needed).
Swim in the river, pool
or sea (The Bellinger River is right below
the hostel, the swimming pool is a 5 minute walk and the beach is a 15
minute drive. With no car you can either ride one of our bikes to the
beach or get us to give you a lift)
There are swimming holes right below the hostel, or just a bikes ride
away are some safely guarded ‘locals swimming holes’ where you
can swim in crystal clear water. There is a choice of uncrowded, unspoilt
beaches close by.
Cycle in the Forest (Our bikes are $5 for the duration of your stay
or "Mud Sweat and Gears" do guided trips from $25. We can organise
lifts to Mud Sweat and Gears)
Cycle through forest with views up to the Dorrigo National Park ending
up at the ‘Never Never swimming holes’.
White Water Rafting (Pick-up from the hostel)
"Wildwater Rafting" offer a fantastic days rafting on the Nymboida
River. The river is grade 3 and 4 and you’ll raft through superb
country. A days trip is $135 which includes morning tea and lunch.
Horse Riding
(Either drive yourself or we can organise lifts)
Two hour rides through State Forest on horses that range from beginners to very experienced.
Cinema
International at Sawtell (25 minutes from the hostel. Drive yourself
or with a minimum number of people we will organise a trip)
Treat yourself to a movie in the refurbished Sawtell Cinema. The cinema
is a beautifully restored deco-styled building, complete with original
organ pit. The Sawtel Cinema shows an eclectic mix of the mainstream Hollywood
trash and repertoire cinema. Tickets are cheap at $6.
Relax at the Hostel
Like many before you, you can enjoy just ‘doing nothing’ on
the verandahs at the hostel. There are hammocks, deck chairs, a spectacular
garden (complete with chooks) and verandahs. It is the ideal place to
bring that good book and just take it easy for a day or two.
Flying
Fox Colony on Bellinger Island (10 minutes walk from the hostel)
Walk to the Island and watch a breeding colony of 40,000 flying foxes
hanging about in the trees. The island is a small pocket of original subtropical
rainforest. In the evening sit on the hostel’s verandah and watch
the flying foxes fill the sky.

Bellingen Jazz & Blues Festival (3rd weekend of August annually)
If you are a Jazz enthusiast (or just an aspiring jazz enthusiast) you’re
bound to enjoy this weekend of Jazz where the whole town takes part. There
is jazz at the markets, jazz in the pub, and jazz in the street. The weekend
culminates in a huge jazz performance on the banks of the Bellinger River.
Bellingen Global Carnival (First weekend of October annually)
With music from all over the world, Bellingen’s own Global Music
Festival has become one of Australia’s premier music events. Celebrating
global culture and Australia’s ethnic diversity - apart from great
music, the carnival features street theatre, food, art and music workshops,
a parade and Market Bazaar.
Stamping Ground Dance Festival
(mid January)
Stamping Ground attracts hundreds of dancers and new enthusiasts - it
creates awareness among men & youths of the athletic and creative possibilities
of the action arts and provides a unique platform for showcasing male
dance. 16 days of one-off workshops, intensive courses, events & performances
with leading dancemen, tutors, choreographers & specialists.
